IEEE - VESIT Intercollegiate Paper Contest

The IEEE-VESIT Student Branch had organized an inter-collegiate Technical Paper Writing Contest on August 1999. The last date for submitting entries was August 20 and the final presentations were held on August 28.

It was the first time IEEE-VESIT had organized an inter-college activity of such mammoth proportions. 86 papers from leading engineering colleges of Mumbai & Navi Mumbai were received. The papers were from various fields of research, covering AI, Neural Networks, Trends in computing, Networking, Internet Technologies, Communication Technology, Computer engineering and Signal Processing. The intense competition amongst the papers made shortlisting of the papers by various judges, a tough task indeed. Although there were 25 deserving papers, only 12 could finally be allowed to present their papers. Eminent personalities from TEC,BARC and SAMEER judged the final round of presentations, held at the V.E.S. Institute of Technology. The participants had to face intense questioning from the panel of judges.

The final winners were:

FIRST PRIZE : "Fractals and their applications" Vishal Shah,Rishikesh Tembe, Vivek Sundaram (VESIT)

SECOND PRIZE: "Asynchronous Tranfer MOde" Rajaraman P.,Amit Bhargava, Vijay V. (VESIT)

THIRD PRIZE & BEST RESEARCH PAPER: "Neural Computing : A Paradigm of our times" Rohit Tanwar, Sunil P., Siddarth T. (VJTI)

BEST PROMISING JUNIOR: "Datawarehousing" Chetan Bagga , Vivek Bharadwaj (VESIT)

The prize distribution was by Mr. Ashank Desai (MD,Mastek Ltd.) and Mr. Murlidharan (Sr. Manager, TEC & Chairperson, IEEE Bombay Section).

The prizes in the form of cash, books and CDs were sponsored by Mastek Ltd., Pioneers Office Automation Ltd. & Shroff Publications.

The AIR Visit

The first industrial visit of IEEE-VESIT was pretty neat!

*The actual visit started at 1030 hrs..20 people had not come..seems they went to the wrong place (colaba) or to that effect...anyways the people at AIR were quite considerate and let the rest of us sit in the AIR auditorium (very impressive place !)..

It started with an introductory lecture by Mr. Indiran (sup. engineer of AIR) ...about the history of broadcasting in India and the world....from marconi in 1901 to new technology..CDs..computers..the works! that was a good lecture. however most SEs who havent done P.Com as yet, found it a little boring..he was discussing modulation, frequency ranges, PSK etc..

He also described the best method of speaking using a mic..speak 1 foot away, straight from the mic for natural voice transmission..and not very close to the mic.. he also told us about 2 new facilities that AIR is coming up with :

1) call some tel no. for the news headlines.

2) call some other no. for song of ur choice.

also it seems that as of now, all the techniques they use for recording , transmission etc are analog...they r soon gonna update them to digital..

we then split into 3 groups : comps, elecs, tele (se & te)

there are 31 studios in AIR, and that includes 1 multi-tracking studio (16 lines!)..we saw quite a few of them :both recording & control rooms. while we were around, the following were taking place: 1 gujarati drama 1 marathi songs prog. (live) 1 instrumental rec. its a nice place ..we saw the places where the daily news as well as the FM shows are recorded..the dial-in programs..how they accomodate a guest speaker, the CD and LP systems they use for transmission..its a huge process..being a RJ is not easy!!

the whole place has the walls made of sound-absorbent material (near the recording studios)..then we went to the terrace where we saw the 2 dish antennae used for transmission..1 for terrestrial (FM) and the other for satellite tranmission (Insat 2-A,B)....and the six 35-ton ACs which cool the entire bldg.

we also saw the working of the multitrack studio..its where the vocals, music etc are mixed.

A Visit to Fr. Agnel's(Vashi)

One of the primary aims of the IEEE-VESIT Student Branch has been to promote the IEEE. We have been doing that by going to various colleges and encourage them to open an IEEE Student Branch by giving them information regarding the IEEE.

Three council members of IEEE-VESIT had gone to Fr. Agnel's College of Engineering (Vashi) this August to promote the IEEE. The session was attended by about 150 students and 3 professors. The students were made aware of the goals of IEEE, it's worldwide reach and it's benefits. They were also informed about the procedure to become IEEE members and that to form a student branch. They were told about the various activities that IEEE conducts and those which IEEE-VESIT organized last
year. The students were also told about the various awards that IEEE gives to it's student members. Also, the societies under the IEEE, which could be of good use to the students from various departments, were listed out.
To end the session, questions were entertained from the students and professors regarding the membership and other issues related to IEEE. An approximate count of how many students were interested in becoming IEEE members was taken, and finally a few interested students were informed in great detail about how to go about forming a branch.

IEEE should be expecting a new student branch in Bombay very soon.

Report on visit to SNDT College of Engineering

This August the IEEE-VESIT Branch visited the SNDT College of Engineering for giving a presentation about IEEE student and branch membership. The team comprised of Ganesh Pai, Vishal Shah, Abhijeet Shrikhande and Rodney Martis. The presentation given to about 150 students, basically comprised of information on · The procedure to become a student member and the advantages of the same. · The various activities held by the IEEE. · Formation of the student branch. · Facilities provided by the IEEE for the student member and the branch as a whole. A branch formation packet was also given along with the detailed procedure of how to form an IEEE branch in their college.

Software Week Report

During the 12th-14th of August this year, the IEEE VESIT Student Branch organized a software Week.

Thursday: The event was flagged off on the 12th with the "HTML coding contest". Contestants were given 2 hours to code in their web-pages on a specified theme. They were provided only with 'Notepad' and a browser. The event attracted 34 contestants(17 teams), who came up with some very creative web-pages.

First Prize: Manoj & Manish

Second Prize: Nitin Shetti & Parag Shah.

Friday: The HTML contest was followed by an intensive "Programming contest". The contestants, numbering 64 (32 teams) were allowed to use either 'C++' or 'C' ,'Pascal'. The contest consisted of 5 problems, which had to be solved in 2 hours time. It provided the SE's a good opportunity to match their wits & programming skills against their seniors.

Best T.E. : Kedar Chitnis & Prashant Choudhary

Best S.E. : Aniruddh,Vishwanath

Saturday: After 2 days of intensive coding, the pace cooled down a trifle, with the "Software Quiz". This event, which evoked a mammoth response, tested the contestants with techie trivia. The quiz had around 50 questions and lasted around 1 hour.

First Prize: Nitin Shetti & Parag Shah.

Second Prize: Apurva

Saturday: The Software Week ended in grand style on Saturday midnight with the "Online-programming contest". Here, the contestants(team of max.3)ho had pre-registered by e-mail, were mailed a set of nerve-wracking problems. They were given three hours to crack the problems and turned in their solutions by e-mail. 13 team enteries were received.

First Prize: R.Venkatesh

Second Prize: Ram S , Santosh P
